Davis Acting General Manager MBTA ATTN: Fare Proposal 10 Park Plaza, Suite 3910 Boston, MA 02116 Dear Mr. Davis: I am writing to express my complete disagreement with the potential MBTA fare increases and service reductions, as they will adversely affect the Greater Boston area. I am especially concerned about the impact on the North Shore, including Cummings Center in Beverly. While I recognize the budgetary challenges the MBTA faces, I believe that bus service in Greater Boston is being disproportionately targeted with cuts in service. The current MBTA routes in and around the North Shore, including service to Cummings Center and downtown Boston, are well traveled. Any interruption, suspension, or termination of service or, in the alternative, substantive fare increase, would have a significant detrimental impact on our community. North Shore commuters deserve affordable, reliable, and convenient public transportation. Either of the current proposals would have a major negative financial impact for local commuters and businesses. With the proposed changes, many of those who currently take MBTA buses and commuter rail would be forced to travel by car, overburdening the Commonwealth’s infrastructure and polluting the environment. Others, who cannot afford to own a car or are physically unable to drive, would be hit even harder by the proposed plan. I implore the MBTA, State Department of Transportation, and elected officials to come together to protect the valuable public transportation services in and around the North Shore by finding a sensible alternative to the current proposals.
